Ah, the million dollar question! What type of treats should I use to train my dog? Here are some ideas:
Boiled / baked protein
- Take any cut of beef, pork, turkey, chicken (including ground)
- Bake it or boil it
- Strain off any fat
- Let cool
- Chop into bite-size pieces and portion into baggies
- Portion into resealable sandwich baggies
- Refrigerate for up to 3-4 days
- Freeze for up to 2-3 months (freezer-safe container)
Cheese (always opt for low-fat)
- Shred or chop into bite-size pieces
- Portion into resealable sandwich baggies
- Refrigerate for up to 5-7 days
- Freeze for up to 3 months (freezer-safe container)
Wet dog food (canned)
- Add a little water to dilute it
- Portion into a squeeze tube (like this one from Coghlan)
- Refrigerate for up to 5-7 days
- Freeze for up to 2-3 months (freezer-safe container – NOT the squeeze tube)
Low-fat / pancreatitis-friendly treats
- Boil small elbow or shell pasta for 8 minutes, strain and rinse in cold water
- Let it sit in cold water for 5 minutes and when it is completely cooled transfer to a bowl
- Open a can of tuna (preferably no-salt or low-salt)
- Strain the liquid into the bowl of pasta and mix well
- If desired, flake the remaining tuna into the mix
- Portion into resealable sandwich baggies
- Refrigerate for up to 3-4 days
- Freeze for up to 2-3 months (freezer-safe container)

We love using the Rollover brand because they have a lot of flavours and are widely available in pet stores and online

- Pile 3-4 slices at a time and dice in one direction, keeping the form
- Turn the pile 90 degrees and dice in the next direction, making tiny cubes.

- Freeze for up to 3 months (freezer-safe container)
